Atkins Diet: Does low carb work as well for all groups?
This video comes out of the multiple comments I have received does it work as well for X as it does for Y. Often, Low carb as been seen as a “Man’s” diet. While it certainly does work for men quite well, it works for women as well too. The second half of this video deals with does it work better for the morbid obese people like my former self or just slightly overweight people. Male vs. Female: Role of a critical visceral adipose tissue threshold (CVATT) in metabolic syndrome: implications for controlling dietary carbohydrates: a review Eric S Freedland Boston University School of Medicine Nutrition & Metabolism 2004, 1:12 “Jeff Volek and colleagues, from the University of Connecticut, also show for the first time that a low carbohydrate diet is much more effective in losing fat from the stomach and chest. They found that fat loss in men was three-times greater in the trunk area, when they were on a low-carbohydrate regime compared to the low-fat diet. Nearly all participants in the study (12 of 15 men and 12 of 13 women) lost more fat on their upper body on the low- carbohydrate diet.” Comparison of the Atkins, Zone, Ornish, and LEARN Diets for Change in Weight and Related Risk Factors Among Overweight Premenopausal Women jama.ama-assn.org “Results Weight loss was greater for women in the Atkins diet group compared with the other diet groups at 12 months, and mean 12-month weight loss was significantly different between the Atkins and Zone diets. Atkins Diet Misconceptions: Kidney Stones Inevitable?
In another of Atkins Diet Misconception series, I deal with the question of kidney stones or “does the Atkins Diet impair kidney function?” First, if you have damaged kidney function already due to Chronic Kidney Disease, Metabolic disorder, or impaired kidney function, it is recommended that you do not try the Atkins Diet. There is sizable water intake on this diet, and you should follow your doctor’s orders. For everyone else, it has been proved more than once that high protein (or medium protein in the case of Atkins) is safe for kidney function. Those that rail against it have been doctors with bias (PCRM (PETA) related doctors or have relied on bad science studies where multiple items were changed at once. Studies supporting the idea of high protein being safe for HEALTHY people’s kidneys: www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov Dietary protein intake and renal function “”While protein restriction may be appropriate for treatment of existing kidney disease, we find no significant evidence for a detrimental effect of high protein intakes on kidney function in healthy persons after centuries of a high protein Western diet. … Rather, we found that habitual consumption of a high protein diet minimally affected hydration indices. … Therefore, claims that a high protein diet promotes dehydration or adversely “strains” the kidney remain speculative.” www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov March 2000 “Do regular high protein diets have potential health risks on kidney function in athletes?” To conclude …
Atkins Diet Quick Hits: Induction is not only 20g or less
In the fourth video of the “Atkins Diet Quick Hits” series, I deal with a question I get from new people asking about a certain lower carb food or frankenfood and if it is ok due to its low carb. It is often not on the Acceptable Foods List or filled with ingredients not on the list. This is when I get into the discussion why the first phase of the diet is more than just reduce your carbs to less than 20g per day. Here are the main goals of any Induction phase: 1.) Get into ketosis and see its benefits 2.) Get used to the food selection 3.) Control one’s eating habits and prove that control to yourself 4.) Set stage for future weight loss and ability to detect future problem foods when you readd them later Not following the Induction rules and the Acceptable Foods List erodes the guarantee of your success. Atkins Diet: Low Carb Breakfast – not necessarily like Mom made
I deal with the question by a viewer who like I was sick of eggs and bacon, and was looking for alternative breakfast items. My criteria for a good low carb breakfast is: * has to be quick to make * has to be easy to make * has to provide enough nutrition for morning activities and mid day exercise I also suggest the valuable step of prepping for breakfast the night or the week before by chopping the vegetables or cooking the meat beforehand to expand your options. With that in mind, there …
